Environment and Outdoor Skills

Through 4-H environmental and outdoor education projects provide educational opportunities that help young people enjoy time outdoors and develop an understanding and appreciation of the environment.

Environmental Stewardship is the concept of teaching young people how to proactively serve their communities as conservators and protectors of the environment. Youth learn to understand and appreciate expertise and values from a broad range of perspectives and to take responsible action -- not only on their own behalf, but on behalf of future generations.

The specific goals of the Environmental Stewardship program include:

  • understanding ecological concepts,
  • building an awareness of environmental issues and values,
  • developing scientific investigatory and critical thinking skills,
  • learning skills needed for effective action.

In general, these goals foster leadership skills that allow youth to work as full partners with others to develop creative, community-based solutions to difficult environmental challenges.

The 4-H Shooting Sports program is an educational activity to teach firearm safety to 4-H youth and to help them improve their marksmanship and help them enjoy outdoor activities. The 4-H Shooting Sports program is open to 4-H'ers in the 4th-12th grades.

The program encompasses the initiative goals of volunteer leadership, capacity-building for youth and families, and environmental stewardship with commitments from the Louisiana State University AgCenter. Louisiana 4-H Shooting Sports is an active program that is attractive to both youth and adults. It uses positive learning and interaction with youth and adult role models. The disciplines are modeled after the National 4-H Shooting Sports Program and are administered by nationally certified state leaders consisting of extension personnel and volunteers.

The mission of the Louisiana 4-H Shooting Sports Program is to assist youth in acquiring knowledge, developing life skills, and forming attitudes so that they may become self-directing, productive, and contributing members of society.

The focus of all 4-H programs is the development of youth as individuals and as responsible and productive citizens. The National 4-H Shooting Sports Program stands out as an example. Youth learn marksmanship, the safe and responsible use of firearms, the principles of hunting and archery, and much more. The activities of the program and the support of caring adult leaders provide young people with opportunities to develop life skills, self-worth, and conservation ethics.

Louisiana 4-H Shooting Sports Teen Ambassador Program
